Neal Boyd Dies: 'America's Got Talent' Winner Dead at 42

"America's Got Talent Season 3 winner Neal E. Boyd died Sunday of heart failure

TMZ is reporting that the cause of death is heart failure, and Neal had a known heart condition at the time of his death.

E! News reported that Boyd had been seen by numerous doctors before he died, as he was in heart and kidney failure, and he had liver disease. Boyd's high-profile win was so iconic for his hometown that it constituted Sikeston to rebrand October 2008 as "Neal E. Boyd month". His backstory was appropriately bittersweet; as a young man who grew up in poverty, an insurance salesman turned opera singer followed his dream with the support of his family behind him.

Boyd captivated audiences with his booming voice and quickly became a fan-favorite while competing on America's Got Talent back in 2008.

The singer and his mother were reportedly badly injured.

Boyd's death comes one year after he and his mother were involved in a serious auto accident, in which their vehicle ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. He tried again in 2014 but lost in the primary election to Republican Don Rome.

Speaking about the incident at the time, he told the Southeast Missourian: "It was a very, very, very bad wreck ...it's a very slow progress. It's been hard, because you can't get up on stage right now, you can't perform for the audiences and you can't really do too much recording or traveling".

Piers said: "You know Neal, as you began to sing, I think the whole audience felt electricity on the stage".
