Actor Robert De Niro received an onslaught of criticism after he appeared at the Tony Awards on Sunday and said "F**k Trump".

At a groundbreaking for the soon-to-be Nobu restaurant and hotel in Toronto, Robert De Niro apologized to Canadians on Monday for the "idiotic behaviour" of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Viewers watching along at home freaked out as CBS managed to censor most of what was said.

The New York audience immediately started applauding, and as it rose to its feet, De Niro added: 'It's no longer down with Trump. At age 82, Jackson has returned to Broadway for the first time in more than three decades after a lengthy detour into British politics.

What the Oscar victor had said was, "I'm going to say this: F*** Trump".

Ah, the Tony Awards, a chance for us theater nerds around the world to tune in, watch stage heroes be rewarded, and get a sneak peek at what's fresh on the Broadway scene.

Given that show's success on the evening, it wasn't a huge shock that Frozen did not win Best Musical at the Tony Awards.

The man behind Angels in America, legendary playwright Tony Kushner, spoke to reporters backstage about De Niro's spirited introduction for Springsteen, the AP reported. "I know what you're all thinking, sure", Groban said. "Boy, do we need that now".

De Niro's comments brought the cheering crowd at Radio City Music Hall to its feet but were bleeped for USA television audiences.

Other Jewish performers included nominees Ethan Slater and Caissie Levy, and Billy Joel showed up to introduce his friend-the boss-Bruce Springsteen, performing a number from his one-man show. "The offensive language was deleted from the broadcast", CBS said in a statement. Although De Niro was heavily censored during the US telecast, his comments weren't bleeped during the Australian telecast. "He talks about how he wants to punch people in the face, well, I'd like to punch him in the face".
