Trump told Macron EU worse than China on trade

Two points of the joint communique formulated by the G7 members were not negotiated with the USA president, but that didn't prevent the Canadian prime minister from announcing that all member-states had reached common ground on the final statement. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had responded to Trump's recent threats and installing of tariffs in a press conference at the end of the summit.

Canada last week announced retaliatory tariffs on C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) worth of US exports and said it will challenge USA steel and aluminum tariffs under the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization.

Having left the G7 summit in Canada early, Mr Trump's announcement on Twitter that he was backing out of the joint communique torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on a trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.

"We would hope that the United States will similarly honour the commitments that they have made", he said, speaking before a parliamentary statement on the summit by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Kudlow also accused Trudeau of trying to undermine the USA president at a critical time before his summit with the reclusive Kim on Tuesday. "We are not - we, Canada, are not going to be pushed around".

The United States has imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum. However instead due to President Trumps harsh remarks this uncalled for clash started.

Officials have stressed the two countries' extensive trading relationship and pointed out that Canada is the top export destination for 35 US states and that 9 million jobs in the United States depend on trade with its northern neighbor.

Chief trade adviser Peter Navarro said there's "a special place in hell" for Trudeau and anyone else who negotiates in "bad faith" with Trump.

Canada's limited options mean "there is no magical Plan B", said University of Ottawa global affairs professor Patrick Leblond.

Bruce Heyman, the former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, on Monday slammed Donald Trump's treatment of Justin Trudeau, and Canada in general, demanding the president apologize for his surrogate's claim there's a "special place in hell" for people like the Canadian prime minister.

"This has to be a political play".

"We should think very carefully about a situation in which we are retaliating against one of our closest neighbors and our best friends and longtime allies", said Dr. Robert Kudrle, of the Humphrey School of Public Policy.

Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, and Trudeau's promise to hit back, was the source of the conflict. "Do Timber & Lumber in USA?"

"Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks ... and we refrain particularly from ad hominem attacks when it comes from a close ally", Ms Freeland told reporters in Quebec City on Sunday.

One new reason for optimism in Ottawa is a new-found strength in numbers.

Officially, the Trump administration used national security grounds to justify the tariffs, but Trump's clash with Canada may have more to do with a perceived personal slight than the facts of the bilateral relationship.
