Prime Minister hit by dramatic resignation as MPs debate Brexit

Brexit news UK EU latest Theresa May backstop

After ministers' promised to compromise on his demands, Mr Grieve did not push his amendment to a vote and most pro-EU Tory MPs backed down from a potential rebellion on a similar House of Lords amendment to the bill.

Parliament will vote on another series of so called "Brexit wrecking" amendments later on Tuesday, some of which seek to commit the government to remaining a member of the EU single market and "a customs union", while another aims to steer the United Kingdom toward membership of the European Economic Area.

Nick Ferrari told a Conservative "rebel" that her job is to get on with delivering the Brexit at the people voted for.

The House of Commons rejected the "meaningful vote" amendment to the withdrawal bill by a majority of 26, with 324 votes against the amendment, and 298 in favour of it.

"They had every opportunity to question Theresa May, they come not to and the message is quite clear: a unified Conservative Party, working together will deliver the Brexit that the people voted for". The "meaningful vote" amendment, which would assert Parliament's authority over the negotiations and effectively hand control to MPs, still represents an opportunity to turn the whole process on its head.

Mr Buckland replied: "I entirely agree: the Government's policy is to achieve a deal because we are mindful of the points that he and others understand".

The government will face an nearly certain defeat if it now reneges on a promise to give MPs more of a say over the final Brexit deal.

Failure to appease the rebels would likely see May defeated in parliament in the coming weeks, blowing apart Tuesday's hard-won truce and badly undermining her leadership of a minority government and a divided political party.

A third development, which would allow MPs to direct the government on future talks if there is no resolution on the withdrawal agreement by 15 February, is also on the cards.

"Grieve's amendment puts that right and in a way Govt could and should accept it".

The government agreed to discuss elements of a rebel plan to create new checks and balances on the Brexit deal, and where possible incorporate them into the laws that will formally end Britain's European Union membership.

Brexiteers were dejected by the turn of events, but are pinning their immediate hopes on the detail in the government's compromise. She says the way the government is applying the Sewel convention undermines Wales. "There could be a confidence motion [in the prime minister] or an early general election".

Theresa May's Janus-faced promise on a "meaningful vote" may have averted a defeat.
