Team Sky's Geraint Thomas defended his race lead after stage six of the Criterium du Dauphine

Geraint Thomas has extended his lead at the Criterium du Dauphine cycling race in France, after finishing second behind stage six victor Pello Bilbao on Saturday's penultimate day of racing.

The Welshman finished 60 seconds ahead of nearest rival Adam Yates - who won the final stage of the race. France's Romain Bardet, of AG2R, jumped to third from seventh overnight and is at 2min 01sec. It's a massive race and it's an incredible feeling.

It was Thomas' second World Tour stage race win after he won Paris-Nice in 2016.

It came on a 110 kilometres stage from Frontenex which is nearly a carbon copy of this year's Tour de France stage 11.

"I was always thinking of the next stage, the next climb and it's an awesome feeling [to win] and I think it will really start to sink in tonight".

"The Tour de France has been my goal since start of season, but the Volta a Catalunya set things back", Yates said about crashing out of the Catalonia tour in March.

Pello Bilbao won the penultimate stage of the Criterium du Dauphine that finished after 110km in La Rosière Espace San Bernardo today.

"From the start of the year I said I wanted to get there [the Tour de France] in the best shape possible and I'm on course for that".

"Each kilometre I was more confident and happier". Geraint Thomas (GBR) Team Sky 24:43:12 2. Dan Martin (IRL/EAU) 23, 4. Emanuel Buchmann (GER/BOR) 1:02, 7. Pierre Latour (FRA/ALM) 3:49, 10.

Having been the last man standing in support of Thomas, meanwhile, Tao Geoghegan Hart climbed to 13th overall to follow his fifth place in support of Egan Arley Bernal's Amgen Tour of California win last month.
