U.S. to Suspend War Games With South Korea After Kim Summit

Trump Seeks Recovery of US Military Remains in North Korea

President Donald Trump today said the USA will stop conducting military drills on the Korean peninsula, after his historic summit here with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Geng Shuang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesman, told reporters on Wednesday: "North Korea has stopped its nuclear tests, and the US and South Korea are practising self-constraint on their military exercises".

"I don't think that's wise", said Sen.

China, North Korea's main ally, accounts for more than 90 percent of the isolated country's trade, and China's participation is widely seen as crucial for global sanctions to have any bite.

There was no immediate comment about the sanctions claim from the U.S. side. This year, 100 aircraft participated in show of air power, including eight US F-22 stealth fighters and a number of B-52 strategic bombers based on the Pacific island of Guam.

Observers welcomed the summit as a breakthrough for the two leaders, who in recent months had exchanged insults and war threats, but said that talks going forward would need to include more specifics in order to gauge North Korea's readiness to give up its weapons program.

In South Korea, leading owner HMM said it did not have a statement on what is a national holiday.

There is even the remote possibility that North Korea could flip allegiances, just as China did in 1972.

"We welcome the negotiations of chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump", the Ministry said in a statement.

Yet he immediately faced pointed questions at home about whether he got little and gave away much in his push to make a deal with the young autocrat - including an agreement to halt United States military exercises with South Korea.

President Moon Jae-in is expected to be briefed personally by the USA secretary of state, who landed at Osan Air Base.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat.

However, dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme will present a daunting challenge.

"Now Kim Jong Un has declared that he's the ruler of a "normalized" country".

Trump's tweet frames the United States suspending war games, seen as a massive win for both China and North Korea in the negotiations, as a thrifty move from the US.

"It is something that [North Korea] very much appreciated", he said, adding that the exercises cost too much and are seen as provocative by North Korea.

"Defense Secretary Jim Mattis used an approach that aides say can work: 'He says, 'Your instincts are absolutely correct, ' and then gets him [the president] to do the exact opposite of what his instincts say, '" The Journal wrote, citing a person close to the White House.
