They claimed that the driver, Ahmad El Boutari, then booted them out of the auto - sparking an argument in the street. "At one point we leaned over and pecked [a] kiss, very fast", she said.

The driver says: "It's illegal. We don't get out there much and march in the parade", Iovine says.

One of the women said, "What are you fucking talking about?"

Iovine said her reaction to the ordeal quickly went from shock to anger. "We always thought we lived in this untouchable New York City bubble where LGBTQ is so accepted", Pichl said.

"My girlfriend started laughing", she said.

"We were sitting on opposite sides of the vehicle", she said. "But I think this has inspired us to get our voice out there more and get out there to celebrate everything this community has done, (what) we have to offer as human beings and the rights that we deserve".

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, which licenses about 180,000 drivers of auto services and yellow cabs, called his behaviour "ridiculous". "'That's illegal"." The cell phone video also shows the driver claiming that what the couple did was disrespectful.

"You are not allowed ... it's disrespectful ... it's disrespectful".

And a same-sex IN couple said that a driver for Lyft, another popular ride-sharing service, also kicked them out for a "peck".

El Boutari told the Daily News that the couple had been acting "crudely" in his auto even before the kiss. "That's when we pulled out our phone", Ms Pichl claimed, according to ABC7 Eyewitness News.

"I think, for both us, it was just a shock, not really knowing what to say", she said.

Uber's Community Guidelines state, in the "Give riders and drivers some personal space" section, "We all value our personal space and privacy". "We never thought something like this would happen to us".

An Uber spokeswoman told ABC News that they are in touch with the women and investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, Iovine and Pichl say the incident has changed their perspective on being in a same-sex couple in New York City.

"Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have reached out to the rider regarding her experience", an Uber spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement.

On Saturday, the Manhattan couple filed a complaint with Uber, which contacted the pair on Monday, apologised and said the company would fully refund their ride. A spokesperson for the TLC said, "The blatantly discriminatory behavior described by the complainant is repugnant".
