USA to offer N Korea ‘unique’ security guarantee after denuclearisation: Mike Pompeo

Kim Yo Jong, leader Kim's younger sister, was also spotted in his delegation.

The schedule also includes time for Trump to deliver a press conference before his scheduled departure at 8 p.m. local time Tuesday (8 a.m. ET Tuesday). But on the eve of the summit, he altered his schedule, opting to return at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday after a full day of meetings with Kim - nearly 15 hours earlier than previously anticipated.

Still, some experts say it's important that both leaders come into the meeting with clear, realistic goals.

If Trump and Kim are able to determine what the oft-repeated "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" would look like, that would be a positive first step, Wertz added.

Trump also reached Singapore on Sunday night.

"This is a leader who really is an unknown personality".

"We can expect a one on one at the beginning", Palladino was quoted as saying by The Straits Times. "We will be fine!"

From there, the two will engage in more talks with advisers joining them through a working lunch.

Trump said he had formed a "very special bond" with Kim and that relationship with North Korea would be very different.

"It was possible that we got to this point thanks to President Trump and Chairman Kim's bold decisions".

The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists who have converged on Singapore, and by gawkers around the world, up until he shakes hands with Mr Trump on Tuesday.

But after a flurry of diplomatic overtures eased tension in recent months, the two leaders are now headed for a history-making handshake that U.S. officials hope could eventually lead to dismantling of a North Korean nuclear programme that threatens the United States.

"Sanctions will remain until North Korea completely and verifiably eliminates its mass-destruction programs".

But Pompeo's comments sought to reaffirm the high benchmark the USA is setting for Trump and Kim to reach an agreement.

Kim is set to meet Tuesday with Trump in what's shaping up to be one of the most unusual summits in modern history.

Iran welcomes any step toward boosting the welfare of the people of this region, he said, adding, however, that given the past record of the USA and Trump, who, during his presidency, has violated worldwide treaties, especially the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran remains deeply pessimistic about the United States president's intentions.

As the two leaders met, Singapore navy vessels, and air force Apache helicopters patrolled, while fighter jets and an Gulfstream 550 early warning aircraft circled.

The shift from a focus on denuclearization to keeping the discussions going comes after the summit was briefly called off by the President in late May.

White House officials have said Rodman will play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations. It did not include an agreement to take steps toward ending the technical state of warfare between the US and North Korea. The US President has spurned offers from Japan to more closely coordinate a unified position ahead of the summit and aides worry he has not internalized the information presented to him in briefings.

'SPUR OF THE MOMENT'Trump, speaking in Canada on Saturday, said any agreement at the summit would be "spur of the moment", underscoring the uncertain outcome of what he called a "mission of peace".

The portable toilet was among a number of items that Kim packed for the historic meeting as part of a tightly planned visit, according to The Chosunilbo, one of South Korea's largest circulated newspapers.

Last week, Rodman said he would "give whatever support is needed" to his "friends" Trump and Kim.

The news covered the front page of the ruling party's newspaper and was the top - and only - item on the first news broadcast of the day on Korean Central Television, which for many North Koreans is the only channel available.

"We're prepared to take actions that will provide them sufficient certainty that denuclearization isn't something that ends badly for them - indeed just the opposite, that it leads to a brighter, better future for the North Korean people", Pompeo said, though he declined to get into specifics.

Trump has already floated the possibility of inviting Kim to Washington if the summit goes well. Traffic was held up in the steamy midday sun and scores of bystanders were penned in by police when Trump went to meet Lee.
