With 32 teams eyeing the title, the Football World Cup makes for an exciting contest. Mexico played host to the 1970 and 1986 World Cup.

"The fact that we have the opportunity to be a part of a World Cup that's still eight years away, and benefit from the buildup to 2026... the sport is in a growth spurt right now, at the professional and the registration level", he said.

Canadian cities that could host World Cup games in 2026 include Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal.

The 2026 World Cup is coming to the United States - and Miami is expected to be one of the venues.

Canada has played host to numerous Federation Internationale de Football Association events in the past, including the men's Under-16 World Championship in 1987, the 2002 under-19 women's World Championship, the 2007 men's Under-20 World Cup, the 2014 Under-20 Women's World Cup and the 2015 Women's World Cup.

The joint bid pitched a near shutout in the Americas, winning 38 of 39 votes cast.

The tournament has been jointly hosted only once before, by Japan and Korea in 2002.

But soccer fans across Canada have reason to celebrate regardless, he said.

The joint bid had been the front-runner for the 48-team tournament from the moment a North American coalition was first mooted two years ago, and there have been spells when it has looked like the only credible candidate. Any warm-up matches would likely occur in late May or early June 2026, though the tournament dates have yet to be confirmed.

Leading up to the vote that would see Canada, the US and Mexico win their joint bid to host the tournament, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Alphonso Davies spoke about what playing in the World Cup in his home country would mean to him. The leaders of Mexico and Canada gleefully cheered the outcome, emphasizing unity with the United States. Canadian officials have said they will push to have games played in all three of their host cities. Such a determination may not occur until at least late 2025, once teams qualify and learn their opening-round assignments.

The U.S. has submitted 17 cities to host matches, but that list will be narrowed down to 10 by 2021.

The final for this year's tournament will take place at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow on July 15, with the victor not only lifting the trophy but also qualifying for the 2021 Confederations Cup in Qatar. Those cities won't be announced until 2020, but Kansas City could be one of them.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams playing a total of 80 games - 60 are planned in the USA and 10 each in Canada and Mexico. However, Shanks expects soccer's popularity to continue to grow in the US within the next eight years.

"It's great for the country and great for soccer in America", he said.
