United Kingdom government proposes three scenarios for parliament vote on Brexit deal

Using words like "bad faith" and "betrayal", pro-Remain Tory MPs have accused the Government of ripping up an agreement they had made with Theresa May earlier this week.

The Prime Minister is facing the biggest parliamentary bust-up yet on her flagship Brexit legislation after a compromise created to keep critics in her own party on board was denounced as "unacceptable" by Tory Remainers.

Eurosceptics urged the government to hold firm, saying the rebels were seeking to undermine the 2016 referendum vote for Brexit.

The deal to avert the rebellion, thrashed out on the benches of the House of Commons just minutes before voting, was for the government to discuss changes to the bill which would hand lawmakers more control over the Brexit process.

Backbencher Angela Smith tweeted: "Majority of Labour backbenchers voted for Lords" Amendment on EEA tonight.

MPs voted by 324 votes to 298 to rejecting an amendment passed by the House of Lords in April that would strengthen the hand of the Commons in the event of it rejecting the final Brexit deal.

At Prime minister's Questions on Wednesday Mrs May said that Parliament can not be allowed to "overturn the will of the British people" on Brexit.

The dispute between the government and a group of soft Brexit Tories centers around a "meaningful vote" on any eventual deal negotiated with Brussels, created to enable MPs to vote down the final agreement without risking leaving the European Union with no deal at all.

However, May's decision to refuse to offer MPs a veto means the future of her Brexit legislation and her authority as prime minister are now once again back in doubt.

If confirmed, the move represents a dramatic climbdown from Mrs May's original plan to offer MPs a "take it or leave it" vote to accept the withdrawal agreement or leave the European Union without a deal.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland said the government remained "open-minded", but this may or may not result in it coming forward with new proposals in the coming days.

She posted on Twitter: "I understand the Govt has tabled an amendment that has not been agreed by Dominic Grieve".

Leading rebel Dominic Grieve said he hoped a compromise would be found, but if not, "this isn't the end of the matter".

If MPs reject the agreement reached by Mrs May with Brussels - or if no deal has been obtained by January 21 - Parliament will be offered the opportunity only to vote on a "neutral motion" stating that it has considered a minister's statement on the issue.

Grieve had hoped to agree a motion that MPs could amend so that they could set out what kind of action the government should take if they rejected a deal negotiated with Brussels.

Last year Lee pressed the government to release an economic impact assessment of a hard Brexit put together by the civil service.

An amendment introduced by Labour, which called for access to the single market but stopped short of EEA membership, was defeated by 82 votes, with no party rebels.

She added: "I can not countenance parliament being able to overturn the will of the British people".
