'He is the optimum striker' - Tunisia coach Maaloul praises Kane

England news Harry Kane

Who impressed for England during their opening World Cup clash with Tunisia? "VAR is there to look at those incidents. but all we can do is get on with the game".

There was also no referee review for the Tunisia penalty, though VAR did consider the incident, when Kyle Walker caught Fakhreddine Ben Youssef with his arm.

While Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer were more subdued, Lineker reacted as every other England fan did...

"We got told before that there was going to be quite a lot of flies and when we went out for the warm-up it was a lot more than we all kind of thought", Kane said.

Following his heroics against Tunisia in England's World Cup opener, Harry Kane duly obliged to undertake his media duties. but not how or where you expected.

Kane scored twice from corners, including in second-half stoppage time, but on another day he might have been awarded a couple of penalties too after being dragged to the ground by his markers - firstly Tunisia's goalscorer Ferjani Sassi and then Yassine Meriah. However England were patient, and in added time, Kane stepped up when it mattered most to nod home, losing his marker and converting from Harry Maguire's flick-on from a corner, to sink the valiant Tunisians. "We played really well in the first half and could have got more, we deserved to be ahead".

"Maybe I'll be sitting here in four weeks with the big gold one", he quipped back.

"It will improve with time because there are some decisions - like the ones you said - where they have to at least check whether or not it's a penalty". He erroneously gave Cameroon player Sebastien Siani a red card for a high reckless challenge on Emre Can.

It wasn't pretty in the end but England got their World Cup group G campaign under way with a late win in Volgograd.

Double goalscorer Kane said credit was due to the England players for not giving in. "First games at the World Cup have been hard in the past".

But Monday was a dream start for Harry, England's new prince.

Going into the Panama game, England aren't chasing the points.

The Liverpool skipper said: "We can be friends off the field but when you're on the field it's important that you're fighting for your mate next to you". We've got to recover well, we've got to prepare well and we've got to play as well, if not better, in the second game to win that.

It's understood chief refereeing figures and officials will hold a press conference-perhaps at the end of the World Cup group stage-to go over some of the controversial calls and scrutinised decisions.
