John Travolta’s ‘Gotti’ Fires Back at Critics After 0% Rotten Tomatoes Score

John Travolta's 'Gotti' Gets 0 Percent Rotten Tomatoes Score

"Audiences loved 'Gotti, '" the title cards read.

But it appears those latter two things could be connected in a devious way. In recent years, variations on this phrase have emerged time and again - often in the wake of a poorly-reviewed major film. "We are helping boost traffic to these theaters for people to see these great films".

Rice went on to not only defend his film but also criticize Rotten Tomatoes: "We don't need to contrive anything". Now that's a rave review, and one that seems more accurate than many of these "audience reviews" on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Audiences loved Gotti but critics don't want you to see it", the ad continues.

Starring John Travolta as John Gotti and directed by Entourage star Kevin Connolly, the movie pulled in just $2.3 million on its opening weekend and the film's marketing team is now desperately pleading with punters to check it out despite the reviews. And then, "Who would you trust more?" The other thing that's happening is I find it odd that Rotten Tomatoes would only post 26 reviews. On Twitter, Screen Junkies critic Dan Murrell has voiced suspicion at the sheer number of users who've left a rating for Gotti; he rightly points out that, although Travolta's film had a relatively small release compared to Incredibles 2, Gotti got nearly as many user reviews as Pixar's movie did. For instance, the audience score for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has a 46% audience score compared to its positive 91% critic score. If it does, we'd wager it won't be thanks to its very odd marketing campaign. Even before the movie comes out, users affect the audience score just by clicking "want to see" or "not interested".

A Reddit user did some digging on those audience review accounts and uncovered that of the first 58 reviews at the time of their investigation, 45 of them had been created this month.

The advent of Rotten Tomatoes and other aggregate scoring sites has, for better or worse, helped to highlight the difference between what audiences and critics respond to.

My own calculations were a bit different, but the conclusion is still the same: there's an unusual amount of accounts that were created in June and have only reviewed "Gotti".
