PS4 blocks Fortnite Xbox and Switch cross-play because of ‘money’ says ex-Sony Online boss

"When I was at Sony", he tweeted, "the stated reason internally for this was money". "Fortnite" on Switch does support crossplay with Xbox, PC, and mobile. According to former Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley it's simple: money. Worse yet, if you started playing "Fortnite" on the PlayStation 4, you couldn't bring your purchased items with you to those other consoles.

It remains to be seen whether Sony will reverse its current decision on the crossplay controversy but, at this point, clutching onto that particular stance in the modern age seems more PR hassle than it's worth.

"Simple as that", Smedley added.

Yes, Mr. Smedley, that is indeed a dumb reason.

It's an issue that has been the source of some public backlash in the past for a refusal to allow cross-platform multiplayer in games like Rocket League and Minecraft, but has come back to the fore after the release of Fortnite Battle Royale for Nintendo Switch and many PS4 players finding that they can not log into their Epic account and have absolutely no recourse.

Re-releasing classic games at a lower price is nothing new for Sony as the company has been conducting the practice since the original PlayStation through its Greatest Hits line.

In fact, they've gone further than that, by blocking Switch users from using their existing Fortnite account if it's already been used on PlayStation 4. In a statement to BBC, Sony said "We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation Community is interested in to enhance their gaming community".

As people continue to ask why you can't play Fortnite on Nintendo Switch if you have a PS4 account, the pressure on Sony to do something about it is not going away. The free-to-play game capitalizes on the widely-popular "Battle Royale" gameplay, which pits players against each other until one is left standing.
