Phil Mickelson apologises for hitting moving ball in US Open meltdown

Things went a little better for Phil Mickelson at the 13th hole Sunday than on Saturday prompting this show of celebration

"My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend".

Mickelson caused a storm when he ran out of patience at the 13th in his third round, chasing a putt that rolled past the cup and hitting the ball back toward the hole before it had stopped rolling down the slope.

"Honestly, I laughed", Rory McIlroy said Tuesday of his reaction upon learning of Mickelson's putt.

Later, after acknowledging he was using Rule 14-5 to his advantage, Mickelson called USGA officials for clarification on the rule after hearing suggestions he should be disqualified from the US Open. "If there was a chance it was going to go back behind the bunker and he's got to chip back or he was going to play off the green anyways.so he was potentially saving himself a shot". "I'm sorry that you're taking it that way, it's certainly not meant that way". I'm embarrassed and disappointed by my actions.

Graeme McDowell was shocked by Mickelson's antics and only sorry the Californian (right) tried to argue that he used the rules in his favour instead of holding up his hands and saying he'd had a blowout.

The outcry was so extreme Mickelson's wife Amy later said he spoke to USGA executive director Mike Davis about voluntarily withdrawing so as to avoid drawing any more attention to the situation. "Phil knows the rules".

Afterwards, Mickelson, who carded 81, told FOX: "I was just going back and forth and I'd gladly take the two shots over continuing that display. Not saying to let the greens go and let them dry out and make it unfair, I'm just saying plan accordingly and hopefully whatever the score finishes, it finishes, whether it's under par or over par".

As the fallout continued in the last few days, Mickelson clearly came to the realization that it wasn't amusing and felt compelled to tell the public what he was truly feeling at the time - even though it came four days late.

"So if that was the intent, then what's the harm in that?"

Phil Mickelson has broken his silence following his US Open meltdown last weekend. "I thought there was a massive overreaction to it".
