Melania Trump makes unannounced trip to Texas to visit children separated from their families at border

On Thursday, June 21, First Lady Melania Trump made an unannounced visit to Upbring New Hope Children's Center in the border town of McAllen, Texas.

She re-donned the jacket and wore it when she deplaned back at Andrews Air Force Base despite the media storm that had erupted over her initial wearing. The high in the District on Friday, the first day of summer, was 86 degrees.

The first lady's spokesperson said the jacket wasn't meant to give off any "hidden message".

"A tone-deaf sartorial decision or a hidden message from the first lady?"

By the time she arrived in McAllen, Texas the first lady had changed out of the controversial garment into a cream button-up safari-style jacket.

'She wants to see these children and she wants to help children.

However, photos from her trip do not mesh with the rows of cages in cavernous detention facilities shown in government handout photos, nor with the accounts and audio of children crying for their parents.

"She told him "I am headed down to Texas" and he was supportive".

In addition, Trump's order would keep families together but in custody indefinitely while parents are prosecuted for entering the country illegally - a move that could lead to new legal battles for the administration.

One social media user said the incident should prompt people to donate to organisations advocating for immigrant children and their families. "She was on top of the situation before any of that came out", Grisham said. On the other hand, it's rare for a first lady to wear an item of clothing that so directly contradicts her stated intentions.

"I'm here to learn about your facility, to which I know you house children on a long-term basis", she said during a roundtable discussion on Thursday. The executive order certainly is helping pave the way a little bit, but there's still a lot to be done'.

I have no doubt Melania Trump does have a beating heart and feels sympathy for these children, but that means nothing when she is complicit in supporting and uplifting the man who put these children in this situation to begin with.
