Elsewhere parents are being encouraged to walk or cycle their children to school along quieter routes, as research by Global Action Plan for Clean Air Day found primary school children are exposed to 2.5 times more pollution when walking a busy route to school compared to a quiet route. Our report called on Government to promote cross-departmental working, force auto manufacturers to contribute to a Clean Air Fund, and commit real financial support to local authorities breaching NO2 limits.

Today, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health have announced that the potentially harmful impact of indoor air pollution on children is to be the subject of a major study for the first time in the UK.

As part of the national awareness raising campaign, organisers are highlighting a number of areas where air pollution is causing harm to human health, including in indoor environments (see airqualitynews.com story), as well as publicising actions that members of the public can take to lessen their exposure to pollutants outdoors.

We are also putting a range of measures in place to improve air quality in areas where targets are not now being met.

This study comes in conjunction with the Clean Air Day initiative that is taking place across the United Kingdom today to raise awareness about the dangers of air pollution.

For one day only, anyone catching a tram before 7am or after 7pm can travel without buying a ticket.

Cheshire West and Chester council is also offering subsidised public transport on Clean Air Day by providing free Park & Ride travel in Chester.

Professor Jonathan Grigg, a paediatric respiratory consultant and Co-Chair of the Working Group, said:"The potential for indoor-generated air pollution to cause major health effects in children can not now be ignored".

We are one of the organisations that have pledged funding for the continuation of this project.

The report, due to be published in autumn 2019, will provide practical recommendations to Government on what can be done to reduce indoor air pollution.

But too many of us breathe dirty air every day, especially in our towns and cities.

A separate report by Global Action Plan, also released on Thursday, found that children are 30 percent more exposed than adults to risky pollution coming from vehicles on busy roads due to their shorter height.

Meanwhile environmental lawyers at ClientEarth - which has won three court cases against the government over its failure to deal with illegal levels of air pollution - said the Government has missed the point of the report and made soft commitments.
