Rampant Mexico see off South Korea to close on last 16

Osorio was heavily criticised leading up to the World Cup but the Mexico coach has been somewhat justified in his decisions by his side's victories in Russian Federation.

Lozano and Vela then took it in turns to try their luck, but the former saw his goal-bound effort blocked before the latter curled over the crossbar during an open period of the match.

Meanwhile, while the South Koreans are not mathematically out of it - at least until the game between Germany and Sweden later on Saturday - it will take a minor miracle if they are to have any chances of keeping their World Cup dream alive.

Mexico, which upset reigning champion Germany in its June 17 opening match, was favored to win.

Only a Germany win will prevent South Korea being knocked out with a group game remaining. Carlos Vela sent Jo the wrong way for the first goal of the game.

Javier Hernandez's second goal against South Korea helped him hit 50th for the country.

Cancún-born Carlos Vela put El Tri in front in the 26th minute of the match with a penalty kick the team was awarded due to a South Korean handball.

Germany (no points) face Sweden (three) later on Saturday.

This time, the roles were reversed as Hirving Lozano led the charge up the field before feeding a pass to Hernandez, who calmly skipped inside a defender before finishing into the back of the net. A volley from Vela skimmed the bar minutes later.

Korea's talismanic forward Son Heung-min struck a scorching consolation goal in stoppage time from outside the area.

The Mexican Football Federation was slapped with a fine of 10,000 Swiss Francs (US $10,120) after fans shouted the homophobic taunt during the team's 1-0 victory over Germany last Sunday.

While Mexico hasn't yet technically qualified for the last 16, if Sweden draws with or defeats Germany in the match now under way in Sochi, its spot in the second round will be confirmed.

"We must prepare for the next game as if it is the last and get as far in the World Cup as we can".
