Serbian Press Slams ‘Provocative’ Swiss Celebrations After 2-1 Defeat

His team-mate and Arsenal player Granit Xhaka, who is of the same descent as Shaqiri, celebrated in a similar manner when his thunderbolt shot levelled the game earlier on.

Following the goal, Shaqiri made a gesture with his hands which appeared to look like the eagle on Albania's flag.

In a statement released on Saturday night, FIFA said: 'The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Swiss players Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri for their goal celebration during the match Switzerland vs. Serbia.

Soccer's worldwide governing body says it has initiated an investigation into reports of apparent politically tinged celebrations by two ethnic-Albanian members of Switzerland's World Cup squad.

Shaqiri - whose 90th-minute victor sparked wild scenes of celebration - was born in Kosovo, the former Serbian province that declared independence in 2008.

'In relation to the same match, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the Serbian FA for crowd disturbance and the display of political and offensive messages by Serbian fans. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo as an independent country, which gives the much-discussed gestures a political dimension.

Federation Internationale de Football Association said it was also investigating Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic for alleged statements made after the game.

Swiss flags everywhere in Kosovo!

Most Serbian media said the goal celebration was a provocation, but not all took a tone of outrage.

The Serbian football association is also complaining about Shaqiri's boots, the goal celebrations and Albanian flags in the stands, they reported.

Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic - who was born in Bosnia - did not approve of the celebrations. Many settled in Switzerland, but still have strong feelings for their homeland - Xhaka's brother plays for the Albanian national team. If found guilty, Xhaka and Shaqiri face being banned for two games. "You should always show respect", he said after the match.

Xhaka was born in Switzerland, but his ethnic-Albanian parents came from the Serbian city of Kursumlija, where his father was jailed by Yugoslavian authorities in the 1980s for participating in anticommunist demonstrations as a student in the Kosovar capital, Pristina.

"I would send him to the Hague. Then they could put him on trial, like they did to us", Krstajic told Serbian reporters.
