The Los Angeles Lakers are in play, with reports stating the offer to the Spurs could include Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and Brandon Ingram for Leonard, who has expressed he wants to play in Los Angeles and will be entering the previous year of a contract, meaning if he's not signed by the team he's traded to, if he's traded this offseason, he'll be a costly rental.

The Pelicans and Lakers each called center DeMarcus Cousins after free agency began early Sunday morning, and Cousins is expected to schedule meetings with both teams, according to The Undefeated.

The 76ers theoretically could beat an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers for Leonard.

"When you're looking at Kawhi Leonard, you're looking at one of the best two-way players in our game today". It is unclear how many of them will actually play with James rather than being included in a trade.

With the Lakers seemingly bowing out (for now), that leaves the door wide open for the Clippers to make a run at Leonard. The Lakers have been in talks with the Spurs about a trade for the 26-year-old, but reportedly things haven't gone well.

The Lakers have prepared for the summer of 2018 for years, arranging cap space to add one or two stars to bring the team back to relevance in the National Basketball Association.

In addition, the Sixers have also started talking to the San Antonio Spurs about trading for Kawhi Leonard with Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz not available to be traded. The Lakers, who have rebuilt over the last three years, likely have the assets to put together a package for Leonard, but it would rob them of their depth and young core. Regardless of how the rest of this offseason goes, James clearly did not make this move simply based on where he would have best chance of knocking off the Warriors immediately. Leonard can opt out of his current deal and become a free agent next summer.

The Lakers are willing to include former No. 2 pick Brandon Ingram and a future first-round pick in a package for Leonard, but the Spurs are seeking a far more complete haul of young Lakers players and future picks, league sources said.
