Two-time champion Andy Murray has confirmed his withdrawal from this year's men's singles at Wimbledon, citing his lack of readiness for best-of-five-set matches after nearly a year out with injury.

Murray won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 but is not fit to compete this year.

In a unusual way, Andy Murray's withdrawal from Wimbledon is actually a positive sign about where he sees his career going from here.

"We did everything we could to try and be ready in time".

Murray is on the way back from hip surgery he underwent in January.

"I will start practicing on the hard courts from tomorrow and continuing with my rehab and recovery and I'm looking forward to the US hard-court season", Murray's statement read. "Thanks for all the messages of support and I'm excited to finally be back playing after so long out".

Murray, who was due to face France's Benoit Paire in the first round, signed off on his statement by saying: "If anyone needs a coach over the next couple weeks give me buzz!"

Asked if he could have pulled out from Wimbledon, Murray told Sportsweek on BBC Radio 5 live: "Yes, it is still possible".

After pushing his body in practice sessions at the All England Club over the last few days, Murray has opted against risking a further injury setback with a view to playing the American hard-court swing that culminates in the US Open. He is not at his best following hip injury, as explained by him in press conference: 'There're certain things that are still tricky and things I'm still trying to work through.

That comeback raised hope that he could take part in Wimbledon, however, Murray has decided that he isn't yet able to return to five-set matches.

With Murray out, Jason Jung will take Murray's place in the men's draw.
