Malaysia gov't confirms arrest of ex-PM Najib

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested on Tuesday, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, following an investigation into how billions of dollars went missing from a state fund he founded nearly a decade ago.

Najib has consistently denied wrongdoing in dealings with 1MDB, which is short for 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

This story is developing.

Najib's arrest today and expected charge tomorrow takes place just under two months after the shock defeat of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition in the 14th general election on May 9 and nearly three years to the day the Wall Street Journal broke the 1MDB story.

SRC was created in 2011 by Najib's government to pursue overseas investments in energy resources, and was a unit of 1MDB until it was moved to the finance ministry in 2012.

The anti-corruption agency earlier Tuesday questioned Riza Aziz, Najib's stepson and a Hollywood film producer, as it stepped up its probe on 1MDB.

Riza was solemn as he arrived at the anti-graft office Tuesday and didn't speak to reporters.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) had claimed that Riza's company, which produced the Oscar-nominated "The Wolf of Wall Street", received money misappropriated from 1MDB. In the USA, his production company had reached a US$60 million settlement in a suit that alleged the movie was funded by money siphoned from 1MDB.

U.S. investigators say Riza's company, Red Granite Pictures Inc., used money stolen from 1MDB to finance Hollywood films including the Martin Scorsese-directed "The Wolf of Wall Street".

But the initial focus of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation focused on how 42 million ringgit ($10.6 million) went from SRC International to Najib's account.

The accounts of several companies were also frozen as part of the investigation, the taskforce said.
