"But as much as I'm going to try to articulate how traumatizing it is to be hiding under your desk, you don't know until you're there and you feel helpless".

Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Wes Adams said Ramos' actions, including barricading a back door so that people could not escape and his "tactical approach of hunting down and shooting the innocent victims", was evidence of a coordinated attack. He mentioned the name of the columnist - Eric Hartley - 101 times, and a dozen times named Thomas Marquardt, the paper's former editor.

A man armed with smoke grenades and a shotgun attacked journalists in the building Thursday, killing several people before police quickly stormed the building and arrested him, police and witnesses said.

A white man with a long-standing grudge against a newspaper in the United States city of Annapolis massacred five people, mostly journalists, as he blasted his way through its newsroom with a shotgun and smoke grenades in what police say was a 'targeted attack'.

The Committee to Protect Journalists tweeted that before the Maryland shooting, seven journalists had been killed in the U.S. in relation to their work since 1992.

"The FAKE NEWS media.is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!" "Journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job", CNN reported.

Tom Marquardt, the onetime publisher of the Capital Gazette, told The Associated Press at slain journalist Rob Hiaasen's memorial Monday that Ramos sent one letter to a company lawyer on the day of the attack saying he was on his way to the newspaper "to kill as many people" as he could.

According to the Baltimore Sun, one of the letters said: "I further certify I then did proceed to the office of respondent Capital-Gazette Communications ... with the objective of killing every person present".

Though Lori didn't remember him from school, the pair exchanged emails and he seemed to grow more and more obsessed with her. She also described Ramos as, "very cold, he is very calculated, he is very intelligent".

When Lori was first contacted by Ramos, 38, a former Arundel High School classmate, she said she didn't think anything was amiss. In his post, Ramos wrote, "F- you, leave me alone".

"I was seriously concerned he would threaten us with physical violence", he said.

Speaking with NBC's "Today" show in an interview aired Monday, she said his relentless abuse forced her to move out of Maryland, where Ramos is now charged with five counts of murder.

"I'm a police reporter".

"We all thought the problem went away", he said.
