Trump has requested his Commerce Department study whether to impose additional tariffs on cars, trucks and auto parts imported from Europe and other foreign markets, prompting a warning from the European Union that such an action could lead to retaliation involving some $300 billion in USA goods.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has dispensed with diplomatic niceties during a joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump.

A routine White House photo-op took an unusual turn on Monday when Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte interrupted President Donald Trump and then contradicted him on tariffs and trade.

"If we do work it out, that will be positive", Trump said.

Trump and Rutte will both be attending next week's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meetings.

"TRUMP: "- just think about those cars that pour in here". 'Because we both have a business background, we both look at things in a fairly businesslike way, ' he said.

The EU has been engaged in a dispute with the United States over the steel and aluminium tariffs, which were introduced on June 1.

However, on the issue of trade Rutte said the United States risked destabilising transatlantic relations by setting punitive tariffs.

'My point is: scrap the tariffs that are on the table now and let's start talking, ' he said.

Chamber President Tom Donohue said in a statement: "The administration is threatening to undermine the economic progress it worked so hard to achieve".
