Paris - The mother of a French policewoman killed in an attempted armed robbery in 2010 on Tuesday appealed to an escaped prisoner convicted for the incident to hand himself in.

The escape brings to at least five the number of jailbreaks in France in the past three decades involving helicopters.

France's justice minister said several drones were spotted a few months ago flying over the prison and speculated that they were linked to Sunday's escape by Faid.

She suggested that Faid had been left in the same prison for too long, giving the serial fugitive, who had professed to have reformed, time to plot his escape.

"An armed commando group landed in the courtyard of the Sud-Francilien prison in Reau while he was in the visitors' room", the prison authority said.
.

They landed in the only courtyard at Réau that doesn't have anti-aircraft nets.

Faid, 46, was in the visiting room when the three men burst in and got him onto the helicopter.

They hi-jacked their helicopter from a local flight instructor who was forced into taking part in the mission.

Faid was believed to have left by vehicle along with his accomplices. The auto was also found burnt in the commune of Aunay-sous-Bois, near Paris, says Parisien. Faid's brother has now been taken into custody for questioning about his potential involvement.

The men quickly made a spectacular escape by helicopter in an operation which lasted just 10 minutes. Apparently, Faid, also enjoys a cult following in the immigrant suburbs outside Paris.

"He liked adrenaline and wanted to be like the big guys", a police officer said.

At a Paris film festival in April 2009, Faid approached Michael Mann, director of the 1995 gangster film "Heat" starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, telling him: "You were my technical adviser".

A union representative at Reau Prison, Martial Delabroye, told BFM television that "two men dressed in black, wearing balaclavas and police armbands" entered in the prison to look for Faid.

Four prison wardens were taken hostage during the prior attempt, and dynamite was used to escape.

In 1998, he attacked a cash-in-transit van in the northeaster Paris suburb of Villepinte and was sentenced to 18 years of behind bars.
