IRISH Water has made an "urgent appeal" to Limerick customers to conserve water, as restrictions in several local areas remain in place.

The ban means using a hosepipe for watering a garden, cleaning a private motor-vehicle, cleaning a private leisure boat, filling or maintaining a domestic swimming or paddling pool, (with exception of filling them using hand-held containers directly from a tap), is forbidden.

Belfast City Council has defended its policy of continued hosepipe use during the heatwave.

It is up to these companies how they enforce the ban, so it could be at certain times of the day or restricted to certain activities.

What happens if I break the hosepipe ban?

If you're found guilty of using a hosepipe during the ban, you can be prosecuted in a criminal court.

Public water supplies are under threat because of the drought and Irish Water says demand for water is outstripping supply generally.

"We do not want the ban to continue any longer than is necessary, however, the ban will not be lifted until we are confident there is enough treated water to meet the required water demands", NI Water's chief executive officer, Sara Venning, added.

"We now have 39 water supplies under night-time water restrictions and over 100 water supplies at risk due to high consumption".

Ben Earl, water efficiency manager at Southern Water said: "Water is a precious resource and it's important that we all do what we can to reduce wastage, come rain or shine". They're asking people to use common sense and not use water unnecessarily. You can't use a hose to water your plants but you can use a bucket.

An NI Water spokesperson said: "NI Water has asked all councils to voluntarily reduce water usage in the coming days and greatly appreciates their support".

"I'd turn off the tap between uses, I don't have a paddling pool or a auto so there's some things that other people have changed that I probably wouldn't".
