In the Loop: Hundreds Rally to Reunite Immigrant Families

Thousands rally as protest of Trump's immigration policy kicks off in Washington

Protesters hols up signs that read "No Muslim ban" against U.S. President Trump's travel ban gather outside the U.S. Supreme Court as the court issued an immigration ruling June 26, 2018 in Washington, DC.

The rally was organized by the ACLU of New Mexico, ProgressNow New Mexico, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center and several other groups as part of the nationwide "Families Belong Together" movement.

"Trump and his administration have been systematically criminalizing immigration and immigrants, from revoking Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to ramping up intimidating ICE tactics", moveon.org wrote in its page dedicated to Saturday's marches.

"We will keep working to reimagine a new future where our families and loved ones are together to live freely and with dignity", the groups say, "not separated or put in camps or cages". Their anger was focused on the Trump administration and their demand that it reverse an immigration crackdown that has separated children from parents at the U.S-Mexico border. Protesters will show up in U.S. cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Dallas, as well as in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In New York City, thousands began chanting "Shame" and singing "shut detention down" before their planned march across the Brooklyn Bridge.

They waved signs with the messages "Do you know where our children are?", and: "Even the Trump family belongs together".

Since taking office in 2017, Trump has overseen an increase in arrests of people suspected of being in the country illegally.

In this regard, a number of protestors participating in the march were seen sporting "I really do care" t-shirts to support the immigrant families and children. Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys brought her 7-year-old son, and read a letter written by a woman whose child had been taken away from her at the border. "Seeing everyone together for this cause, it's emotional". Thousands of people have indicated they will attend or expressed interest in attending the event on Facebook.

"We care", marchers shouted outside city hall in Dallas.

Though many who show up to the rallies across the country will be seasoned anti-Trump demonstrators, others are new to immigration activism, including parents who say they feel compelled to show up after heart-wrenching accounts of children forcibly taken from their families as they crossed the border illegally.

Steve Adelmund, a father of two, was inspired to organize a protest in rural Marshalltown, Iowa, after turning on the news on Father's Day and seeing children being separated from their families and held in cages.

Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to be abolished and replaced.

Marchers took to city parks and downtown squares from ME to Florida to OR; in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico; on the worldwide bridge between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico; even in Antler, North Dakota, population 27.
