Iran's leaders seek ways to defend economy from U.S. sanctions

U.S. economic pressure on Iran is meant to turn Iranians against their government.

Britain, France and Germany, which signed the Iran deal along with the United States, Russia and China say the agreement prevents Iran developing weapons-grade nuclear fuel.

Maryam Rajavi, who heads the group, told reporters: "Regime change in Iran is within reach as never before".

The former NY mayor made his remarks at a conference of the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an umbrella coalition of opposition groups that seek an end to the Islamic Republic's clerical regime.

Later on June 24, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the United States was determined to destroy the key 2015 nuclear agreement and added that the United States was the dominant economic power in the world and its strategic objective was to force Iran to exit the JCPOA. "The wheels of change have started turning".

Following US President Donald Trump's decision to quit the historic Iran nuclear pact on May 8, Washington vowed to re-impose sanctions against Iran and inflict punishments including secondary sanctions on countries that have business links with the Islamic republic.

At the same time, oil importers including Japan, South Korea, and India, as well as European countries have said they will continue buying Iranian crude. "We need to insist that they join the sanctions once again".

"Freedom is right around the corner ..."

National Security Adviser John Bolton made similar comments at an NCRI rally a year ago, saying that they would be out of exile and ruling Iran before 2019, the report said.

Bolton said in May that the administration's policy was to make sure Iran never got nuclear weapons and not regime change.

On Monday, traders at Tehran's Grand Bazaar staged a rare strike following earlier reports of street protests in provincial cities.

She also addressed the global committee demanding "the recognition of the Iranian people struggle and resistance to put an end to the religious dictatorship" and also for the "support of Iranians to topple the regime in order to prevent the dangers of nuclear weapons, missiles and terrorist Iranian regime and its meddling in the region", according to Rajavi.

But the future remains grim for Mr Rouhani, whose country has yet to feel the full force of USA sanctions on Iranian oil exports which come into effect in November.

Iranians have been hit by rising prices and record levels of unemployment have left a third of those under 30 out of work.

The People's Mujahideen were founded in the 1960s against Iran's royalist government and went on to fight the Islamic regime after the 1979 revolution.
