Third-party developers able to scan Gmail accounts

From there you will be able to see all the apps that now have access to your Google account, and you can remove some of them if you no longer use them or if you're not comfortable with it.

Hundreds of app developers electronically "scan" inboxes of the people who signed up for some of these programs, and in some cases employees do the reading, the paper reported.

Are you connected to any data-sniffing apps?

"Some people might consider that to be a dirty secret", Mr Loder told the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal's Douglas MacMillan reports Google promised to stop the practice because it wanted users to "remain confident that Google will keep privacy and security paramount".

If you want to find out which apps have access to your account information, it's rather simple. If you're a Google Apps for Business user, you can set permissions so that your users can't even grant those sorts of permissions, either per app or in general.

Take a close look at the third-party apps, and what information they collect - some may access your Google contacts, while others might access Google Drive. Google and these developers need to assure us that they're taking every precaution to protect their users.

The revelation comes at a bad time for Google and Gmail, the world's largest email service with 1.4 billion users.

Hundreds of outside software developers were granted access to private emails through the terms and conditions of the user agreement. Frey maintained that although its automated data processing has cast a shadow over its privacy practices, "no one at Google reads your Gmail", save for specific instances which may warrant the scanning of emails for various purposes like investigating a bug or abuse.

The Journal cites companies like Return Path, a marketing service that reviewed about 8,000 emails two years ago while working on its software; computers can handle about 100 million messages per day.

"It might well be mentioned in there, but it's not what you would think of as reasonable, for a human being in a third-party company to be able to read your emails".

Google allows you to check which apps are connected to your account. Though there is no evidence that third-party developers have misused the data, knowing that unknown persons can access personal data certainly raises apprehensions.

For G Suite users, Google said admins can control which non-Google apps can access users data.
