Church protests Trump’s immigration policy puts the Holy Family behind bars. More

A church in IN has "detained" statues of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in a bold statement against current USA immigration policies.

"So we have the holy family in a chain link enclosure, much like the detention facilities that are being prepared and now exists for families being detained indefinitely", explained Reverend Stephen Carlsen of Christ Church Cathedral. The strong stance taken by the church shows their adamant opinion against the separation of families at the USA border.

Christ Church Cathedral, with its self-described progressive clergy, has a long history of activism and charity work.

"Our job as faithful people is to welcome people with mercy". "Last week, there was a motion filed for the indefinite detention of families in our country, and we just don't think that represents what our faith calls us to. With people who are in need, and our heart should be there, too".

He said he has never done anything like this before, but felt the display was important to make.

"In recent years, as things have changed and gotten more negative we have been raising our voice publicly for the well-being of our people and families across racial lines, across cultural lines, saying that we can do better", Carlsen said. "We thought that a picture - and more than that - a religious image, an icon, would capture people's attention and open up hearts".

"We want an end for family detention".

"When we say "every family" we mean families on the border", Carlsen says. The Star noted that both Carlsen and Curtis attended the Families Belong Together rally over the weekend to protest the administration's family separation policy, and the two also attended separate March for Our Lives rallies this spring, to protest inaction on gun control, following the Parkland shooting. "Other people connect the dots and I can see their heart soften".
