Chucky Returning to the Big Screen in Child’s Play Remake

‘Child’s Play’ Reboot In the Works at MGM From ‘It’ Producers

‘Child’s Play’ Reboot In the Works at MGM From ‘It’ Producers

The film will be produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, who also produced It.

Collider is reporting that their sources are telling them that Lars Klevberg has been tapped to direct the reboot, from a script by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM is fast-tracking the project, with production slated to start in Vancouver this September. MGM is being very hush-hush about the plot details, but Collider reports that it will follow a group of kids squaring off with a new age version of Chucky that's more technologically advanced. It's likely that the new doll will be named Chucky, though it's possible that the doll will have a new name. As we hear more, we'll let you know.

The original follows serial killer Charles Lee Ray, who after being fatally wounded by pursuing police, transfers his soul into a Good Guy doll via a Voodoo spell.

No casting has thus far been confirmed.

Lord Of The Rings star Brad Dourif voiced Chucky in all seven films; it remains to be seen who will take over the role. Don Mancini has served as a screenwriter on every "Child's Play" installment, including an upcoming television series, but he will not be working on the story for Klevberg's reboot.

The Chucky films have been in fine form of late, with the latest - 2017's Cult Of Chucky - a strong entry in the series. With this latest announcement, it seems that Mancini's wing of the franchise could be headed to TV, with the big screen wide open for whatever MGM has planned for this reboot. Tom Holland directed that horror classic, which starred Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Catherine Hicks as his mother, and Chris Sarandon as a detective. He's represented by WME and Good Fear Film + Management.
