World Cup diary: Spain prepare for last-16 test

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, center, reacts after the round of 16 match between Uruguay and Portugal at the 2018 soccer World Cup at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Russia, Saturday, June 30, 2018.

Ronaldo's 24-year-old model girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez attended the Round of 16 game, where Portugal lost to Uruguay 1-2 and were ousted from the World Cup.

He dominated the headlines but acclaim for the goals has been quickly replaced by concerns about the injury he sustained in the 74th minute against Portugal.

"The player remains injured", the statement said.

A tweet sent out by the official Uruguay Twitter account did not confirm nor deny that the 31-year-old was definitely out of action, but claimed that he was "in pain" and continuing his rehabilitation process.

Ronaldo and the team left Zhukovsky Airport on the outskirts of Moscow on Sunday - the same airport they arrived at before the tournament - with the star man looking sharp in a waistcoat and sunglasses.

Edinson Cavani's header gave Uruguay the lead after seven minutes, but Pepe equalised 10 minutes after half-time to set up an intriguing contest. "He tried. The team didn't win because Uruguay scored twice".

"Their strikers were very strong; one was there, the other one came from behind". "Their play and their speed is incredible".

The South Americans have conceded just one goal - the joint lowest in the tournament with Brazil - in four straight wins on their way to the showdown in Nizhny Novgorod.

Portugal won the 2016 European Championship and came to Russian Federation with high expectations following the surprise title in France two years ago, its first in a major tournament.

It has not been any different at his club PSG either.

Suarez with 53 goals and Cavani 44 - 12 of them from assists by his striking partner - are their two all-time leading scorers and again showed their understanding with an astonishing opening goal in the seventh minute.

When it comes to Cavani, though, Suarez says it is unclear at the moment whether he will be able to face Didier Deschamps' side.
