Government to ban "gay conversion therapies"

Our survey shows that many LGBT people do not report hate incidents they experience and that the abhorrent practice of conversion therapy is still alive in our country.

Conversion therapy has not been banned in the United States federally, but a total of 12 states have outlawed the practice on minors.

The survey also found that more than two-thirds of LGBT people avoided holding hands with their same-sex partner in public, fearing hostility if they did.

Mrs May commented: "We can be proud that the United Kingdom is a world leader in advancing LGBT rights, but the overwhelming response to our survey has shone a light on the many areas where we can improve the lives of LGBT people".

Supporters of bans note that gay conversion therapy has been widely discredited by US medical and mental health associations, and say barring it helps protect youths from depression, anxiety and potential suicide by preventing them from being forced into such treatment.

He continued: "My concern about the terms of the ban.is that it's not extensive enough because I think there are a lot of churches who practice an intolerance of gay people, who pray the gay away, who when someone comes forward and says "I think I'm gay", pile huge pressure on them one way or the other or remove responsibilities from them within the church".

The action plan sets out 75 steps to help improve the lives of LGBT people. "Labour is calling for the Act to be updated to ensure greater protections for trans people, and we urge Theresa May to finally work with us to make it law".

"While UK citizens are denied the right to marry in Northern Ireland and while more than half of LGBT young people don't feel safe in schools - the UK Government is failing LGBT people".

The move represents an about-turn on the government's previous position, having suggested that a legal ban on gay therapy was unworkable.

Of the respondents, 61 per cent identified as gay or lesbian and a quarter identified as bisexual. "We want to strip away the barriers that hold people back so that everyone can go as far as their hard work and talent can take them".

Writing in The Independent, Women and Equalities Minister Penny Mordaunt described the practise as "abuse of the worst kind and must be stamped out".

Of the trans men surveyed, 56% said they had avoided expressing their gender identity for fear of a negative reaction from others. And two in five LGBT people had experienced discrimination, such as verbal harassment, in the past year alone.

We now need people in all of Britain's communities to also come out for LGBT equality and to stand up against the hate and abuse we face daily.

He said unionists should no longer argue that unionism meant intolerance towards gay people and alternative sexualities.

"We can not achieve true equality and respect for LGBT rights whilst harmful, prejudiced, and discriminatory practices are permitted to take place, regardless of where those practices are occuring. "Conversion therapy" most certainly infringes upon all three".
