Hamas tried to hack Israeli soldiers with World Cup app, Israel says

The officers said Hamas operatives, using false identities, contacted soldiers on social media and encouraged them to download the apps to their private smart phones.

A dating app called GlanceLove advertised itself as "the best choice for new lovers who care about their privacy and safety".

According to the head of Israel's Information Security Department, dozens of reports of similar interactions began flooding in, exposing an entire Hamas cell tasked with using social media to extract intel from the phones of young soldiers.

It similarly discovered dozens of fake social media accounts being used by Hamas militants in an attempt to honeypot Israeli soldiers.

About 100 soldiers were duped into doing downloading the spyware, the IDF said, though it insisted no damage had been done to Israeli security. The third, Golden Cup, was filled with information about the World Cup taking place in Russian Federation.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said operatives from the Islamist militant group created fake Facebook profiles, pretending to be attractive young Israelis. They then initiated flirtatious exchanges with their targets, before encouraging them to download the apps.

One of the apps, "Golden Cup", was set up last month as the World Cup soccer championship kicked off in Russian Federation, the Israeli officers said.

There was also additional bait of FIFA World Cup action with an app offering "HD live streaming of games, summaries and live updates".

Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and has fought several wars with Israel, declined comment. A senior intelligence official said the plot had been foiled, and the army in turn introduced stricter social media policies for its soldiers and opened a hotline for soldiers anxious about hacking attempts.

The assailants uploaded their custom-built Golden Cup, Wink Chat, and Glance Love applications to the Google Store, to make them seem legitimate, according to the officers.

Once one of the apps was on the recipient's phone, officers said, the phone could be taken over to covertly take and send photographs, eavesdrop on conversations, copy stored files and pictures, and transmit location details. Once installed, the apps would allow militants in Gaza to access soldiers' phone numbers, cameras, and microphones remotely.

"Such activity had the potential to inflict damage to the IDF's information security but no damage has been done", the officer said.

Israeli soldiers have been warned to be cautious on social media, being told to only accept friend requests from people they already know, to refrain from uploading sensitive information to social networks, and to download applications only from the original App Store-not through links.
