Rep. Jordan Denies He Knew About Abuse While Coach at Ohio State

Jim Jordan Allegations against me aren't true

An NBC News report published Tuesday alleged the powerful OH congressman was aware of allegations that Dr. Richard Strauss was molesting members of the wrestling team when he was an assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994, but that he ignored those claims of abuse. Mr. Jordan, a Republican, has denied that.

"Congressman Jordan never saw any abuse, never heard about any abuse, and never had any abuse reported to him during his time as a coach at Ohio State", the statement released Tuesday said.

"If what is alleged is true, the victims deserve a full investigation and justice".

A spokesman for Ryan told CNBC that "these are serious allegations and issues".

Strauss died in 2005, but the university announced earlier this year that it would investigate the allegations against the physician and whether enough was done to protect the students.

The allegations come at a critical time for Jordan, whom conservative outside groups have endorsed as a possible replacement for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who is not running for reelection. Though the Times sees that outcome as "unlikely", it believes he'll exert influence over the selection.

"Yet again, I think Jim is in a position where he doesn't know what to say now because I think he received absolutely awful advice from whomever was advising him because, again, all you have to do is research the word abuse".

Fury said Jordan was willing to cooperate with the investigation but had not been contacted about an interview, a point disputed by the law firm appointed by the Ohio attorney general's office to represent Ohio State in the matter.

Jordan responded to a question from Politico on Tuesday about whether he is concerned about the allegations that he ignored the abuse, saying: "We've got the truth on our side".

A spokesman for Jordan said he would "assist" Ohio State University's investigators in any way - despite not yet being contacted by them.

Yetts says it was far from the only discussion players had with Jordan, and that it was commonly known Strauss showered with players though he didn't work out.

Former wrestler Dunyasha Yetts says he went straight to Jordan after Strauss began to remove his wrestling shorts when he sought help for a thumb injury. "I don't know how he could have forgotten because this was traumatic for all the athletes". "I'll take it because I've never bullied Jim Jordan on the mat".

Former Ohio State wrestler Mike DiSabato was one of three ex-OSU wrestlers who confirmed Jordan's knowingness to NBC News. The most notable, of course, is the Jerry Sandusky scandal, which led to the firing of legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno and criminal charges against Sandusky that now have him serving a prison sentence that will effectively mean that he will die in prison. That sandal also lead to civil lawsuits against Penn State that have been largely settled at the cost of tens of millions of dollars, as well as sanctions from the NCAA that were ultimately lifted several years later.

A team doctor who allegedly molested athletes; coaches who reportedly knew but turned a blind eye.

Jordan, who served in the OH state legislature, was elected to the House in 2006 and has played a role in virtually every debate pitting conservative insurgents against House GOP leaders. As noted, Jordan is already a powerful force on Capitol Hill due to his leadership of the House Freedom Caucus even though he does not, as of yet, have a position in House GOP leadership.
