Scarlett Johansson criticised for decision to play transgender man in new biopic

The Hollywood star already plays a wild woman in the Marvel universe.

Vallée said he's open to seeing transgender actors at auditions, but "it's not about aiming for.an astronaut because your character is an astronaut".

Another critic said: "scarlett johansson is gonna work with the ghost in the shell director AGAIN but this time she's gonna play a trans man" above a picture of an appropriately astonished Lisa Simpson. Fans and fellow actors-including trans Sense8 star Jamie Clayton-were critical of Johansson's choice to accept the role, arguing that it took an opportunity away from a transgender actor. "I just don't think it should be mandatory".

All of these projects have been critical darlings, while also celebrating the performances of Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman respectively. There are increasing calls for Hollywood to improve the diversity of people it puts on the screen, as well as the belief held by some that transgender roles should be played by transgender people. She has acted in popular films like the Avengers, Just not that into you, Under this skin among others. According to reports, Johansson is scheduled to portray a transgender person in an upcoming movie. Both Rub & Tug and Ghost In A Shell are directed by Rupert Sands.

The 33-year-old actress faced accusations of "whitewashing" after being cast as cyborg soldier Mira Killian / Major Kusanagi - a role originally written as east Asian - in futuristic crime drama Ghost In The Shell.

Rub & Tug is due to go into production early next year, and lists both Johansson and Spider Man actor Tobey Maguire among its producers.

It sounds like a riveting story (the title is kind of gross and undermines the seriousness of what happened), but so far in his film career, Sanders has shown he can create very pretty movies that are devoid of substance.

Johansson is set to play Lois Jean Gill in the movie, which is based on Gill's true life story.

A representative for Johansson did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment.
