Mahee Gilbert-Ouimet, an epidemiologist and postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto, and her colleagues analyzed data from a database of more than 7,000 workers in Canada who were followed for more than 12 years to better understand whether work hours can affect the risk of diabetes.

None of the participants had a diagnosis of diabetes at the beginning of the study, but during the monitoring period one in 10 participants developed type 2 diabetes, with the team finding that diagnoses were more common among men, older participants, and those with obesity.

Women who work long hours may be at a heightened risk for diabetes, a new study found.

"Women tend to do twice as much unpaid work, like household chores and other family duties".

A 2015 study done by University College London found that people working long hours are more likely to have a stroke, and the reasons might be connected to stress, physical inactivity, and higher alcohol consumption.

In this regard, long work hours have recently been linked with diabetes, but more high-quality prospective studies are needed.

Gilbert-Ouimet added that, "Even when men and women do similar work, women earn less".

Specifically, those who worked ≥45 hours in 1 week reported a significantly higher risk for developing incident diabetes compared with women who worked 35-40 hours each week (HR 1.63, 95% CI 1.04-2.57), according to Mahée Gilbert-Ouimet, PhD candidate, of Centre de recherche FRQS in Quebec, and colleagues. Working hours were divided into four groups - 15-34 hours, 35-40 hours, 41-44 hours and 45+ hours. Moreover, the gender pay gap between men and women also plays an important role.

They noted that previous research has indicated that long work hours can increase the tendency for unhealthy behaviours and also lead to poor mental health and sleep problems.

"Weight loss was the dominant predictor of reduced diabetes incidence", study researcher Richard Hamman, from the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, and colleagues wrote in the study.

The study also showed that if an individual is overworked, it might cause a stress response that leads to hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance which might contribute to the development of diabetes. What's more, working hours were measured at one time point only, and it wasn't possible to deduce from the medical records which type of diabetes participants had, although type I diabetes accounts for only around one in 20 adult cases.
