Three years after making its debut, it is being reported that Apple Music has surpassed Spotify's paid US subscriber count. However, we do know that both companies are now sitting at around 20 million U.S. subscribers each, with Apple slightly in the lead.

As the battle between the top streaming services rages on, Apple Music has reportedly beat Spotify in one of the most important areas. The source, a US-based, major distributor, shared a report detailing the subscriber tallies of several streaming music services, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and Sirius XM.

Additionally, the new data projects that Apple Music will widen the distance between Spotify in the coming months. Spotify bests Apple in the global arena though, with more than 70 million paid subscribers worldwide, and about 160 million overall users.

Anyone who has been keeping up with this heated platform war shouldn't be too surprised at the results. The new report follows an earlier Wall Street Journal story suggesting Apple Music's rate of growth was on pace to eventually pass Spotify in the U.S. As more HomePods and iPhones are sold, more customers will become exposed to the tech giant's streaming service. Apple Music, on the other hand, has only been around for three years. As MBW notes, there are a number of factors that could've contributed to this, including the fact the album appeared on Apple Music right at midnight while it wasn't available on Spotify until a couple hours later.
