England football fans celebrate in the streets after victory over Sweden

In the second half England goal keeper Jordan Pickford saved the day with stunning defense.

The country hasn't won a World Cup since 1966, so most people who gathered to watch the match today have been waiting their entire lives to see England reclaim the Cup.

It's the first time since 1990 that the Three Lions have reached the semi-final of the World Cup and belief that they can end a 52-year wait to become champions is growing.

The Three Lions continue to roar.

We have lads, Gareth Southgate had said, "from Barnsley, Leeds, Bolton, Blackburn". Janne Andersson's side are supremely well drilled, but do not possess the pace or penetration to chase a game.

"Personally, I don't think I performed as well as I should have but as a team it was solid".

England fans lose all control.

Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored with headers to advance England to the penultimate stage where they will face either Croatia or host nation Russian Federation.

England had laboured without reward before Ashley Young lined up a corner on the left and his curled effort was met by Maguire charging forward with conviction and barging Emil Forsberg out of his way to power a header down into the net.

"We looked composed", England captain Harry Kane said after the Saturday match (NZT Sunday).

"They were better than we were and I have the greatest respect and congratulations to England".

Leicester defender Maguire headed in the opening goal from a corner on 30 minutes, with Alli adding a second just before the hour. He said: "It was a mature performance in a high-pressure game".

England have a long tradition of excellent goalkeepers but also a tradition of playing them beyond their sell-by-date, with fatal consequences. "I wanted to say that already on the pitch, too, to our players".

"We know. We still know there's a big game ahead, we looked composed, like we controlled the game, we just have to go again. We worked on that in training so credit to the staff".
