White House communications chiefs often give USA presidents behind-the-scenes advice or how best to relate their decisions to the American public and the world.

Ailes was facing sexual harassment allegations, and one report said Fox and O'Reilly had paid out $13 million to settle harassment claims by five women.

Some of the accounts portrayed Shine as Ailes' protector and fixer. "Competent, hard working and a believer in making America great again!"

Donald Trump Jr. defended the decision to appoint Shine on Thursday afternoon.

Shine was never accused of sexual misconduct nor convicted of any wrongdoing.

He was not accused of harassment like Ailes and former Fox personality Bill O'Reilly.

Shine is the fifth leader of the White House communications department - he follows Hicks, Anthony Scaramucci, Sean Spicer and Michael Dubke. Rupert Murdoch is virtually a member of the White House staff, so frequent are mentions of his weekly (and sometimes daily) talks with the President.

Shine was named co-president of the network after Roger Ailes was forced out as a result of a sexual harassment scandal.

Former "Chelsea" host Chelsea Handler mocked the White House's officials statement regarding the Shine hiring, tweeting "The White House said he "brings over two decades of television programming, communications, and coverup of sexual harassment". He denied the allegations.

"Roger Ailes' enabler and confidant is well qualified to speak on behalf of a president who brags about assaulting women and preying on teenage beauty pageant contestants, and pays adult film actresses to be quiet about his adultery", Smith said. He is also joining the White House team as Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin prepares to depart.
