In San Diego County, a fast-moving wildfire burned a handful of homes.

Calfire says the fire, called Klamathon, started Thursday afternoon and has forced evacuations in the Hornbrook.

South of the freeway, a handful of homes were completely engulfed in flames.

A Red Flag Warning, denoting extreme fire-weather danger, remains in effect for the South Coast through 10 a.m. Saturday.

The County also requests that residents only call 911 if there is an emergency, as the lines are now "jammed up".

Mandatory evacuations were issued for 3,200 people, Santa Barbara County said in a news release.

Neither fire officials nor the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department identified the victim or their cause of death. But they gave no other details.

Bushfires in the west of the United States have killed one person and torched hundreds of homes, with new fires sweeping Southern California as the state struggles through a record-setting heatwave.

A wildfire burning through drought-stricken timber and brush near California's border with OR has killed one person and destroyed multiple structures as it grows largely out of control, authorities said Friday.

As of Saturday morning, a spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) said there were close to a dozen fires that crews were working to contain.

She says the blaze is threatening 300 homes near Hornbook, California, a town of 250 people about 14 miles south of the OR border. Crews said at 6 a.m. that the fire is about 5 percent contained. Officials expect increasingly warm temperatures and dry weather this weekend could spur fire growth.

The City of Medford has prepared a web page with updates on air quality, fire risk and restrictions.

Nine structures have been destroyed northeast of lake Berryessa, the first report of such damage.

Coming a day after Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Siskiyou County, a person has died as a result of the Klamathon Fire, Cal Fire announced Friday morning.

Farther north in OR, authorities urged hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts to avoid forests near the state line.

The areas of concern include the Pacific Crest Trail, Mount Ashland and the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.
