Teams were putting in the final preparations for the British Grand Prix qualifying later this afternoon when Hartley was involved in a horrifying moment.

The Silverstone circuit is one of the fastest on the F1 calendar.

Early in the free practice session, as it was running down Silverstone's Wellington straight, Hartley's STR13 suffered a complete front-left suspension failure under braking that violently pitched the vehicle into the barriers. The front wheel of his Toro Rosso vehicle skewed vertically and Hartley lost control of the auto.

Driving down the 200mph Wellington Straight, Hartley suddenly lost all control of his auto as he went hurtling into the barriers. He walked away from the incident, and was given the all-clear to drive following checks at the medical centre.

Hartley responded to a question asking "are you ok?" saying "yep, suspension failure".

The Toro Rosso driver was travelling at around 300km/h when the suspension failed on his front-left tyre, causing him to spectacularly crash into the tyre barrier.

Haas's Romain Grosjean and Red Bull's Max Verstappen were other two drivers who crashed during the practice session on Friday.

The condition of Hartley and his vehicle will need to be checked over before qualifying begins at 2pm, live on Sky Sports F1.
