Russia, Croatia each make one change for quarter-final

After making the semi-final in 1998 in France the Croatians return to the last four, this time to face England.

The defending champions at the time defeated Yugoslavia in the quarterfinals and Italy in the semifinals that year, which also made Italy the last host nation to lose on penalties before Saturday.

Host country Russian Federation was knocked out of the World Cup on Saturday after a dramatic match that went to penalty kicks, and Croatia fans weren't the only ones who were exuberant.

Ivan Rakitic converted the decisive spot-kick after Mario Fernandes, who had netted an equaliser for Russian Federation with five minutes of extra-time remaining, hit his effort from 12 yards wide.

But with five minutes to go before the end of extra time Mario Fernandes scored to force penalties.

Russia's midfielder Aleksandr Erokhin (L) and Croatia's defender Sime Vrsaljko vie for the ball during the World Cup Quarter Final in Fisht Stadium, Sochi, Russia, July 7, 2018. Igor Akinfeev later blocked an attempt from Mateo Kovacic.

Fernandes then went from hero to villain, the scorer of the equalizing extra-time goal dragging his penalty kick woefully wide, handing Croatia the advantage. Croatia equalized with Andrej Kramaric's header near halftime. Both teams created chances in the second half with Perisic going agonisingly close, only to be denied by the post. The English team defeated Sweden 2-0.

The victory overwhelmed Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic, who cried after Rakitic's winning penalty.

Ivan Rakitic, so often a key man for Barcelona, was not almost as influential as at club level, while in defense, Russia's Mario Fernandes beat more highly rated defenders to head home a late equalizer.

Cherchesov feels his country grew to love his players during famous wins over Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Spain but says they must look to achieve more in the future.
