Domagoj Vida scored the second goal for Croatia in the 101st minute after receiving a nice pass from Luka Modric in which Russian Federation goalie Igor Akinfeev was helpless.

Russian Federation felt they should have had a penalty in the first half of extra time but the referee was right to turn down the appeals.

Ivan Rakitic scored the victor from the spot as Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev dived the opposite direction.

Just moments later and the visitors had a corner and then a goal as defender Domagoj Vida headed home from the set piece.

The game finished 2-2 after extra-time following a late equaliser by Russia's Mario Fernandes. Akinfeev looked to have saved Luka Modric's penalty but it came back off the inside of the post and span back into the net in cruel manner.

Zlatko Dalic's men needed a penalty shootout victory of their own against Denmark in the last round after Luka Modric missed a spot kick in normal time.

Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic scored the last penalty for Croatia to send them to the semifinal where they will face England.
