Fifa World Cup Despite Spain upset Russia may find Croatia’s midfield too hot to handle

Host nation Russia's dream run at the World Cup will be put to the test against Croatia in the quarter-finals on Saturday - Here are the confirmed line-ups for both sides.

The lowest-ranked side entering the competition, the hosts had taken a first-half lead though Denis Cheryshev's blast from distance, only for Croatia to equalise through Andrej Kramaric soon after.

However, Croatia levelled when Andrej Kramaric headed home Mario Mandzukic's cross.

Croatia's Domagoj Vida, Dejan Lovren and Josip Pivaric celebrate after winning the penalty shootout against Russia in Fisht Stadium, Sochi, Russia.

His hero status, however, lasted all of 20 minutes as he missed a decisive penalty in the shootout, allowing Ivan Rakitic to step up and slot home the victor.

Cheryshev scored twice in Russia's 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the tournament's opening game, and was also on target as they defeated Egypt 3-1 in their second group outing.

Croatia did finally go ahead when Vida met a corner with a weak downward header which found its way through two sets of legs and rolled into the net. Mario Fernandes (Russia) header from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner. Russian Federation beat Spain 4-3 and Croatia defeated Denmark 3-2 in the round of 16.

"We should have finished the job before penalties, but maybe it's written in the stars that we have to go through the extra drama", said inspirational playmaker Luka Modric.

The second half was more cagey as Croatia tried to probe through Russia's back line, and Kramaric attempted a bicycle kick that was easily gathered by Russian Federation goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Yuri Gazinskiy became Russia's third substitutes, coming in for Dzyuba, but Croatia almost ran into trouble after making two more subs, Josip Pivaric and Mateo Kovacic on for Ivan Strinic and Kramaric.

And in the extra session, it looked like Croatia was well on their way to the victory and avoiding penalty kicks.

The Croats hadn't advanced this far at the World Cup since 1998, when the country made its first appearance.

Croatia will next play England in the semifinals on Wednesday in Moscow.

It promises to be a fascinating encounter Sweden & England battle it out for a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
