European Council President: US 'won't have a better ally' than EU

NATO Fears Trump May Threaten to Pull Troops From Europe If They Don't Increase Spending

NATO Fears Trump May Threaten to Pull Troops From Europe If They Don't Increase Spending

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media alongside First Lady Melania Trump as they walk to Marine One prior to departure from the South Lawn of the White House in Washington on Tuesday, as they travel on a week-long trip to Europe, with stops in Brussels, London, Scotland and Helsinki. "This is not fair, nor is it acceptable", he said.

The tensions with Trump look all the more stark in the context of a summit that will take important decisions to boost NATO's ability to defend itself from the threat it sees from Russian Federation.

Tusk turned once more to Twitter on Tuesday morning to criticize Trump's overtures towards Russian Federation and China.

"Dear @realDonaldTrump. US doesn't have and won't have a better ally than EU".

Questions linger about a potential trade war with the EU.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that all allies were increasing defense spending in real terms because economies in Europe were growing.

He also brushed off Tusk's warning about alienating American allies.

President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin talk as Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quan, right, looks on during the family photo session at the APEC Summit in Danang, Vietnam, Nov. 11, 2017. That disparity "has been a constant", North Atlantic Treaty Organisation says, and has only grown since the US began increasing its defense spending after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

"It will become increasingly hard to justify to American citizens why some countries continue to fail to meet our shared collective security commitments", Trump said in a letter addressed to Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg seen by Bloomberg News.

Diplomats are quoted as predicting that Trump will threaten to pull USA troops out of Ukraine, and ultimately out of Europe in general over the spending demands. Separately, doubts about Trump's commitment to European security have pushed EU leaders to boost defense cooperation.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday acknowledged that his upcoming visit with British Prime Minister Theresa May comes during a time of "turmoil" in her country and said it was up to the British people to decide whether May remains in power.

"We protect Europe (which is good) at great financial loss, and then get unfairly clobbered on Trade".

Trump also noted that 2% of GDP should be the "bare minimum for confronting today's very real and very vicious threats".

On July 16, United States and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will hold their first summit together in Helsinki.

When asked whether May agreed with Trump's assessment, the spokesman said he hoped Trump would have a positive view of Britain after his visit which starts on Thursday.

"The president is going into a situation where most of the countries he will be talking to will not be thinking internationally because they have so many headaches domestically", said Christopher Swift, a national security scholar at Georgetown University.
