The new 10-inch Surface Go, which ships August 2 in the USA and two dozen other markets, is the least costly among the five Surface devices that Microsoft makes. Power-wise, Surface Go has a dual-core, four-thread Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor.

Microsoft quietly launched its Surface Go today, a 2:1 that's aimed towards the education sector.

An LTE variant of the Surface Go is planned and will be arriving later this year.

The 10-inch PixelSense display features a 3:2 aspect ratio and an 1800 x 1200 resolution. Check. Built-in kickstand? Check.

To make the Surface Go a full laptop-replacement, one will also need to invest in a Type Cover.

In terms of battery life, the Surface Go official numbers are slightly lower than those of the iPad: the Go is said to last up to 9 hours on a single charge, while the iPad can last up to 10 hours.

Anyway, the Surface Go is Microsoft's most compact device yet weighing over 500g and measures 8.9mm thin only. As expected, Surface Go supports Windows Hello for secure sign-in using facial recognition.

All of the Surface Go machines ship with Windows 10 S installed, meaning only apps downloaded from the Microsoft Store can be used. The company just launched a 10” Surface Go with Windows 10 out of the box, although with its lite S flavor.

But just what is the Surface Go? This approach is similar to what Apple follows with its iPad Pro lineup. Gone are the stark, angled edges of the Surface Pro in lieu of rounder, softer edges that help give this version of the Surface its own identity through such a relatively small adjustment.

It runs a full version of Windows 10. The 256GB configuration does not yet have a price tag. The Surface Go may very well be what the Surface 3 had aspired to years ago, and it was well worth the wait.

That will get you the tablet alone, with a separate Surface Go Signature Type Cover and Surface Pen each costing £99/$99. Just remember that Alcantara stains easily. A Surface Pen will set you back another $99.

Like Microsoft's earlier devices, the Surface Go will work with optional keyboards and mouses.

But keep in mind that the accessories and extras will cost you, so the price point won't necessarily be as affordable as it seems.

There's one other way the Surface Go stands out versus the iPad. Prices range from $399 to more than $549. There are other "firstline-worker" PCs and tablets emerging.

Make no mistake, Microsoft's Surface business in total is still a fraction of Apple's enormous hardware revenues.

The pre-orders of Surface Go will begin on July 10 and it will start shipping from the next month.
