Minnesotans among 212 confirmed cases linked to veggie tray Cyclospora outbreak

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

"If Del Monte believes that my clients should've washed these pre-packaged vegetables they bought at Kwik Trip, I think the customers should know that".

'Most people reported buying the trays at Kwik Trip convenience stores, ' the CDC said.

More than 200 people in four states have been infected with an intestinal parasite after eating prepackaged vegetable trays sold by Del Monte Foods, federal authorities said.

Osterholm said he suspected the actual number of cases was much higher than the 212 confirmed so far by health officials.

The CDC first reported the outbreak in mid-June with the cases in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and MI.

The earliest reported symptoms in this outbreak began on May 14 and those who are ill range in age from 13 to 79 years old.

Tony Lund is one of more than 50 Minnesotans who fell victim to the Cyclospora outbreak and said the last five weeks have destroyed his life. The condition has been linked to "6 oz., 12 oz., and 28 oz. vegetable trays containing fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots, and dill dip", which were recalled by Del Monte Fresh Produce on June 15. Still, no matter where you live, if you have their veggies in your fridge with a sell by date of June 17, do yourself a favor and compost it ASAP.

The FDA has not identified which of the ingredients it believes to be the cause of this outbreak, and each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration.

'Consumers who believe that they are in possession of any of the above products affected by this recall should dispose of the product in an appropriate waste container, ' the FDA said.

The investigation is ongoing and the CDC will provide updates when more information is available. Specific lab tests are required to diagnose the infection, which has symptoms that can be confused with other illnesses.
