Noida now has the largest mobile factory in the world

Inaugurating the new facility, spread over 129,000 sq metres at Sector 81, Modi said Samsung will export 30 per cent of the handsets made at the factory to other markets.

Korean technology giant Samsung on Monday inaugurated the world's largest mobile phone factory at its Noida facility, providing a fillip to the Narendra Modi government's efforts to promote manufacturing in the country, and also signalling its intent to take on Chinese counterparts, which have been dominating the Indian market.

Eagerly await Prime Minister Modi's visit to South Korea in 2020: South Korean President Moon Jae-in at joint press statement with Prime Minister Modi.

South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics Monday inaugurated what it said is the world's largest mobile factory that will have a capacity of 120 million handsets a year - almost double the current 68 million - under a phased expansion by 2020. The mentioned plant will double the smartphone production.

According to IDC in February this year, India saw a 14% annual growth in smartphone sales totalling 124 million units in 2017.

India now counts about 400 million smartphone users out of its population of 1.3 billion people, meaning there's still a vast amount of potential consumers to draw from, the Verge noted.

Prime Minister Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in had also visited the Gandhi Smriti yesterday, which is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. He added the Samsung unit will export its products globally. "At this new plant, 1,000 more people will get jobs", Modi said. Samsung is a long-term partner of India.

Built in 1996, the Noida factory was one of the first global electronics manufacturing facilities established in India, according to the firm.

"Our push for Make in India is not just part of our economic policy but a commitment for bilateral ties with countries like South Korea", he said.

The prime minister's office (PMO) tweeted a picture of the two leaders travelling on the Delhi Metro.

Moon arrived in New Delhi on Sunday on a four-day visit to India. Another picture tweeted by the PMO showed them at the Yamuna Bank metro station.

"They travelled using tokens with others passengers and there was no delay in the Blue Line due to this", the official said.

In a press briefing last week, Moon's top economic aide Kim Hyun-chul further commented that Moon hopes to take Korea-India relations to a new level. As CNBC reported back in January, Apple sells just 2.5 percent of its smartphones in India, with the major limiting factors being price combined with the fact Apple services including Maps and Siri simply don't work very well there.
