Jeremy Hunt replaces Boris Johnson as UK Foreign Secretary

Brexit secretary David Davis quit on Sunday following crunch talks at Chequers, saying the agreed trade position for the white paper meant "we are giving too much away too easily and that's a risky strategy at this time".

Mrs May said she was "sorry - and a little surprised" by Mr Johnson's move after his apparent support on Friday.

"If Brexit day ever happens, it will be a day of mourning, it is very hard to see where the positive story is going to come from to help the country turn over a new leaf".

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.

Johnson spoke for angry Conservative Brexit-backers in his resignation letter to May when he complained that voters weren't going to get the things he'd promised them when he campaigned to leave the EU.

The dramatic departure of the two senior cabinet ministers has sparked rumours that May could face an imminent leadership challenge.

"The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one", he said.

Merkel welcomed the fact that Britain had formulated a position to take into stalled negotiations with the EU.

Jacob Rees-Mogg told talkRADIO earlier today (July 10) that he did not know if any MPs had submitted a vote of no confidence.

Last month, Hunt said it was inappropriate for businesses like Airbus to issue warnings about moving jobs because of Brexit and that they should instead be getting behind May in her push for a good deal on leaving the EU.

"I don't see them pulling the plug on her", Polly Mackenzie, director of cross-party think-tank Demos, told AFP. "Maybe I'll speak to him when I get over there", Trump said.

"My personal opinion is that she has strengthened herself quite a bit", he told Al Jazeera in an interview from London.

Party rules dictate that 48 Tory MPs - 15% of those in Parliament - must sign letters of no confidence to trigger a vote, but that number has not yet materialised.

"May is fighting for her survival", Mujtaba Rahman, a managing director at Eurasia Group, said in a research note.

The resignations rocked May in a week that includes a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit starting Wednesday and a United Kingdom visit by US President Donald Trump from Thursday.

But the mood in Brussels - especially after hearing this afternoon that Boris Johnson too was gone - is far from blasé.

"I have no idea, Sir Graham Brady has made it very clear that he will not give anybody any indication of how many letters he has received", he said.

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Hunt, who served as the health secretary, was assigned to his new role late on Monday hours after Johnson handed in his resignation letter to May.

Now she has lost the seventh and eighth ministers from her Cabinet since last year's election in less than 24 hours.

Arch-Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said he did not believe there would be a vote of confidence in Mrs May by Tory MPs, but called on her to change her Brexit stance as he attacked the Cabinet deal on European Union withdrawal hammered out at a summit at Chequers last week.

May's proposals for a future European Union relationship after Britain departs from the bloc next March had taken two years of internal government wrangling to agree.

European Council President Donald Tusk, who leads the EU's political and priority-setting body, said Monday that "the mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-U.K. relations and it is still very far from being resolved".
