The Leicester City midfielder, who is reportedly expected to sign a contract worth $13.8 million per season, was left behind in England as Leicester City traveled to Mahrez's native France for preseason training.

Mahrez joined Leicester from Le Havre in January 2014 and helped them to a first place finish in the Championship.

He wanted to move in January and handed in a transfer request but ended up staying with Leicester when the club's valuation ended City's interest.

City were prepared to pay £60m and throw in winger Patrick Roberts as part of the package but Leicester demanded a fee of £80m due to the deal being proposed shortly before the deadline.

The Algerian, who has been linked with a move to City for months, said he was excited by the challenge and was looking forward to playing under Pep Guardiola. While is he an elite player, the reigning Premier League champions do have plenty of options already within that position group.

After helping them win promotion to the Premier League, he then helped them win the English top flight, scoring 17 goals in 37 games as the won the title in 2015-16.

"Watching them from afar has been a pleasure".

"City's performances last season were outstanding. We're sure he will bring additional attacking quality to our squad".

The Algerian global scored 48 times (39 in league competition) in his 179 appearances with the Foxes.

"I believe my own game can develop under Pep's management".

The Foxes also are better prepared for him to leave this time as they bought highly-rated James Maddison from second-tier Norwich City for £2 million earlier in the close season.

The Algeria winger, who nearly moved to the Etihad Stadium in January only for City to refuse to meet Leicester's valuation, underwent medicals in Manchester yesterday afternoon before signing a five-year contract.
